About Book

Richter: Ecrits, conversations

Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) was a renowned 20th-century pianist born in Ukraine. He was renowned for his vast repertoire, effortless technique, and poetic phrasing. In 1995, Richter commissioned renowned music documentary director Bruno Monsaingon to write his biography. Over the following two years, the two engaged in numerous conversations, and their friendship and trust grew. This relationship culminated in the acclaimed documentaries on Richter and the book, Enigma: Richter.
This book, compiled and edited by Monsaingjon based on interviews with Richter and his notes, consists of two parts: Richter's Autobiography and Richter's Listening Notes. The Autobiography is a comprehensive review of Richter's life and career as a pianist, vividly showcasing the unique personality of this exceptional pianist. The Listening Notes, a collection of Richter's notes from 1970 to 1995, includes notes on concerts and recordings, as well as evaluations of musical works, musicians, and contemporaries. Complementing the Autobiography, the Listening Notes offer a most intuitive perspective on Richter's thought and life.
The Chinese edition of this book features a preface by Monsaingjon himself and over 200 precious images. In addition to the black-and-white images in "Autobiography" and "Notes on Listening to Music," the book also includes a separate volume, "Richter in Images," featuring over 30 color photographs of Richter. Monsaingjon's meticulously compiled statistics on Richter's concerts and repertoire are included in the accompanying volume, "Richter in Numbers."
