Shuowen Jiezi

Xu Xuan's annotated *Shuowen Jiezi* is abbreviated as *Shuowen*. The author was Xu Shen, a classical scholar and philologist of the Eastern Han Dynasty (dedicated to Emperor An of Han). *Shuowen Jiezi* was completed between the 12th year of Yongyuan (100 AD) during Emperor He's reign and the 1st year of Jianguang (121 AD) during Emperor An's reign. *Shuowen Jiezi* is China's first dictionary arranged by radicals. This book pioneered the method of looking up characters by radicals, a method subsequently adopted by most later dictionaries. Duan Yucai called this book "a work unprecedented before, uniquely created by Mr. Xu."
