This book explores four poets—Alexander Pope, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and William Butler Yeats—from three centuries and three countries, each with their own distinctive ways of thinking. Countering the common practice of separating thought from reliable insight in lyric poetry, the authors explain how the poet's thinking operates during the creative process and how the evolution of that thought can be inferred from the surface of the poem. They also explain how a poet's exploration of a given theme involves continuous thought, reframing it in poem after poem, creating an active process that gives rise to the distinct internal structural shapes these poems take.
