Young Paul Bäumer, the fitter Tjaden, Müller who always carried his textbooks, the clear-headed corporal Kropp, the coal miner Haie Westhus, the farmer Detering, and Stanislaus Katczinsky, were sent to the front lines after ten weeks of military training. In 1918, the last man in this company also died at the front. The army high command's war report simply stated: All Quiet on the Western Front. Erich Maria Remarque (June 1898 – September 1970), a German writer born into a working-class family in Germany, participated in World War I at the age of 18. His novel All Quiet on the Western Front, published in 1929, caused a sensation. He died in Switzerland in September 1970. Representative works include All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues), The Promised Land (Das gelobte Land), A Time to Live and a Time to Die (Zeit zu leben und Zeit zu sterben), The Black Obelisk (Der schwarze Obelisk), and The Night in Lisbon (Die Nacht von Lissabon). Jiang Yi, female, studied at the China Conservatory of Music and the University of Osnabrück in Germany. She currently resides in Beijing.
