On May 13, 1969, a sudden disaster changed the lives of Guiying's family, her friends and neighbors who rented in the Sardine Building.
Born in 1970, Malaysian Chinese author He Shufang, in the form of a novel, addresses the historical events that occurred the year before her birth, depicting the lives of the heroines on the day of the event and in the years that followed.
From the late 1960s to the 2010s, they endured dark memories, journeying north and south, accepting the fate of drifting together and apart, and persevering to survive. As if forced into an endless wandering, they gradually aged, were born, and transformed amidst rubber forests, mining lakes, and urban landscapes. Overcoming isolation and broken lives, they slowly healed.
