The Complete Works of Shakespeare
The first complete works of Shakespeare in verse in the Chinese-speaking world. After nearly a hundred years of hard work and unremitting efforts of several generations of translators, the Chinese-speaking world now has five translated versions of the complete works of Shakespeare. The previous four versions were all prose translations, and three of them were based on the translation by the famous translator Zhu Shenghao (the translation independently translated by Mr. Liang Shiqiu was also in prose). This edition, edited and translated by Mr. Fang Ping, is the first complete Shakespeare translation into verse. Shakespeare's plays were originally poetic, using blank verse as their basic form. This edition's ultimate goal is to translate the works into verse, maximizing the tone and rhythm of the original. Not insignificantly, this translation is the latest and most recent. Mr. Fang Ping, a lifelong Shakespeare scholar, served as President of the China Shakespeare Society and Executive Director of the International Shakespeare Association. Therefore, this translation incorporates the latest Shakespearean scholarship. Each play and poem is preceded by a "preface" analyzing the work's artistic characteristics, characterizations, and ideological themes, offering a balanced and comprehensive evaluation. This is followed by a concise "textual research" explaining the work's edition, year of composition, and source material.
This brand-new "Complete Works of Shakespeare" fully absorbs the latest achievements in international Shakespeare studies, and includes a total of 39 Shakespeare plays (in addition to the traditional 37, two plays, "The Two Noble Kinsmen" and "Edward III" are included). The poetry part includes the long poem "Elegy", which was not confirmed as Shakespeare's work until the 1980s and 1990s. The "Complete Works" has more than 4.7 million words, which can be regarded as the most comprehensive, most carefully proofread, and the first Chinese translation of Shakespeare's complete works in poetry in the entire Chinese-speaking world, which is both academic and readable. The publication of this "Complete Works" will be of milestone significance.
