About Book
About Book
This book is an autobiographical novel by Hermann Hesse, a classic work of self-healing and growth for those with social anxiety.
The protagonist, Harry, had lofty personal ideals in his youth but was rejected by the society of his time. One day, he read a pamphlet titled "Steppenwolf" and awakened the "wolf nature" hidden beneath his "humanity." To escape this painful loneliness, he went to taverns to drink and seek pleasure, but only found fleeting relief. Later, he entered a magic theater, where he saw various fragmented personalities, and pieced them together into a complete self. He ultimately overcame despair and returned to real life.
Through Harry's experiences, this book expresses Hesse's own process of mental and physical healing, and also reveals the societal ills of cultural decline in Europe at that time.
