Steppe Chocolate

"When I was little, I was small and sickly. The doctor said I needed to live in a place with good air to get better, so I was sent to my grandmother's house on the Mongolian steppe. I woke up in a yurt, and when I stepped out, there was an endless grassland before my eyes. There were cows, horses, sheep, camels, sheepdogs, and "chocolates" everywhere... I was overjoyed and quickly started picking up chocolates, eating them as I went, my mouth full, and my pockets full. But then my grandmother told me they weren't "chocolates" – they were sheep droppings! To grow tall, I wore the earrings of a Mongolian boy, which had a beautiful red coral bead. Although it was heavy and pulled my head to one side every time I wore it, I insisted on wearing it because I believed it would make me grow tall and strong... I also participated in the "horse-mounting ceremony," a very special event where all relatives and friends would come, and sheep would be slaughtered to celebrate..."
