This book uses two relatively independent death incidents as clues to unravel three intertwined cases, narrating the protagonist Yoko's personal struggles as she is swept up by the times, crushed by life due to her mediocrity and incompetence, and degenerates, gradually sinking into an irredeemable abyss. The story takes place in an urban setting in Japan in 2014. The book is divided into three narrative threads: The first thread is the "solitary death of a middle-aged woman" case, starting from the discovery of the female corpse, recounting the investigation process of policewoman Ayano, and gradually revealing the life of the protagonist Yoko. The second thread begins with the "death of a non-profit organization leader" case. These seemingly unrelated cases gradually converge in the latter half of the book. The third thread narrates Yoko's life experiences in the second person, starting from her childhood until the discovery of the female corpse, vividly depicting Yoko's growth, changes, and the process of being consumed by society.
