Alice Walker, the first African-American female writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award. The film adaptation of the same name was directed by Spielberg and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. It is a classic of Western feminist literature and has been reprinted after 15 years of a famous translation. It tells the story of the awakening of women from the lower classes and is a profound portrayal of female figures - we are one of all things, and we are here.🌊
Editor's Recommendation:
◎A representative work by Alice Walker, the first African-American female writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
◆Won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award;
◆Selected for the BBC's list of "100 Most Influential Novels" in 2019.
◎A classic work of Western feminist literature, translated by Tao Jie, winner of the Lu Xun Literary Translation Award, is reprinted after a lapse of 15 years.
The awakening path of lower-class women, the profound writing of female group portraits:
We are like purple wildflowers, inconspicuous yet flourishing, trampled but holding our heads high - we are one of all things, and we are here.
★Things are changing, I say. The world doesn’t belong to boys and men anymore.
★Only when there is no man in your eyes can you see everything.
★——You are black, you are poor, you are ugly, you are a woman...you are worthless.
—I’m poor, I’m black, I may not be good-looking, and I can’t cook…but here I am.
◎The film adaptation of the same name was directed by the famous director Spielberg. It is the first film in American film history with black people as the theme. It received 11 nominations at the 58th Academy Awards, including heavyweight awards such as Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. The process of directing this film also inspired Spielberg to create another film classic - "Schindler's List".
◆When I directed The Color Purple, I had my first taste of real life...So, if I became more mature, if I began to think seriously about myself as a Jew, it was indeed because of The Color Purple.
-- Steven Spielberg, director of The Color Purple ◆When I first read this book, I was completely captivated. I bought dozens of copies, packed them in my backpack, and gave them to everyone I knew. Later, I heard they were going to make a movie... The Color Purple changed my life. I've never wanted anything more than to play Sofia.
—Famous host Oprah Winfrey (who played Sophia in the movie "The Color Purple" and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress)

Media Recommendation:
★Alice Walker is a writer who fully represents our time.
- Harold Bloom★Walker's writing is sad, but not sentimental, as she shows us the journey of a young woman who finally takes control of her own life...Love can bring redemption, sin can only bring destruction - this is the core theme of this novel, as it is of most of the world's great works.
—The 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction Jury ★ In the realm of fiction, Alice has no rivals... I ask myself, was my vote based on a connection to a black woman? I can honestly say that this factored absolutely nothing into my decision to award this prize. I did my duty and sought out the most outstanding American novel.
—Peter Prescott (Pulitzer Prize judge)

Awards:
Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 1983 National Book Award
Introduction:
This is an epistolary novel that expresses women's awakening, pursuit of independence and freedom, and female friendship.
The film tells the story of Celie, a Black girl in the early 20th-century American South, whose tragic yet resilient life spans most of the decade. As a teenager, she was forced to marry a widower with four children. Her husband, who had a lover, abused her in every way. That was until she met his former lover, the singer Shug. Inspired by Shug, Celie began to see the world with a new perspective, learning to resist the violence of patriarchy and fight for her rights. Upon discovering that her husband had been hiding letters from his sister, Nellie, for years, Celie, enraged, decided to leave and travel with Shug to Memphis, where she truly earned an independent life through hard work. By the end of the story, Celie reconciles with her sincerely repentant husband, becoming friends instead of husband and wife. Celie is eventually reunited with her sister, who has returned from a missionary career in Africa, and their long-lost children.
