The Rice-Sugar Dilemma: Taiwan's Development and Subordination under Japanese Colonialism

This book is a meticulous and detailed study of the history of Taiwanese agriculture. Dr. Ko's work provides invaluable insights. On the one hand, it enhances our understanding of the events of a still-understood imperialism in a little-known region. On the other hand, it has much more to tell us about the history of two of humanity's most important, yet diametrically opposed, foods: rice and sugar. -- Sidney W.
