About Book
About Book
Yan Geling's most free and unrestrained novel,
This is the first time in forty years since its creation that it has been edited without censorship!
"This is what I really wanted to write, without anybody's urging.
Whether it was the urging of a manuscript commission or the push from readers, it was a book I wrote for myself."
Hao Yuxiang, Liu Zijie, and Zhong Wenyin jointly recommend
***
It's like someone who has passed the love stage and falls in love again.
In the 1980s, Chinese intellectuals
Experienced unprecedented freedom, democracy, and sex...
However, this magical time was instantly shattered in the summer of 1989.
The story revolves around the personal experiences of Milady, a young woman who witnesses the awakening and disillusionment of two generations of Chinese artists, writers, and intellectuals. In the early 1980s, at the age of 20, Milady retired from the military art troupe and underwent a pivotal transformation in her life: from a passive dancer to an independent writer.
The 1980s brought a major reshuffle of concepts for Milady: freedom, democracy, sex... People's concepts and behavior patterns seemed to have undergone a subversive change overnight. The once impossible became possible, and the possibilities seemed endless: extramarital affairs, one-night stands, discotheques, black-light dances, underground publishing, nude models...
The 1980s also marked the beginning of a period in which Chinese people, bidding farewell to the Mao era, experienced a profound yearning for universal values such as independence and freedom. For the first time, Milady, her friends, and her father stood on the same level as world literature and art, witnessing the boundless possibilities of free thought, expression, and creation. They were excited and inspired, believing that from then on, limitless possibilities would naturally unfold.
However, everything came to an abrupt end in June 1989...
