The Second Sex 2 is the theoretical foundation of the 20th-century feminist movement. Renowned sociologist Li Yinhe called Beauvoir "a leading figure in feminist thought" and "a mentor and standard-bearer of feminist thought." The book, richly illustrated with vivid examples, offers a fascinating and engaging reading, unlike the often dull and obscure nature of theoretical works. As a thinker, Beauvoir transcended her time. Many of the issues she identified in The Second Sex 2 remain persistent social ills today, some even becoming increasingly serious. Subtitled "Actual Experience," The Second Sex 2 draws on existentialist philosophical theory to examine different stages of a woman's life (childhood, adolescence, sexual enlightenment, marriage, motherhood, and old age). It also offers judgments and assessments on the experiences she may encounter throughout her life (such as homosexuality, becoming an intellectual, a star, a prostitute, or a courtesan), profoundly revealing the nature of women's situation. The author also analyzes the formation process of narcissistic women, romantic women and devout women and the complex social reasons behind them. Finally, he proposes that the only way for women to be liberated is to become independent women. He also emphasizes that only when the economic status of women changes and brings about spiritual, social, cultural and other consequences, and only when women have a fundamental change in their own consciousness, can gender equality be truly achieved.
