Reality is Business: the Portraits Covering Across Belgium, France, Indonesia, Germany, China and Taiwan
In this era of truth-making, we who meet on the Internet and social media,Is it easier to communicate, integrate, and resolve differences; or is it more likely to lead to misunderstandings, hatred, and even disintegration?
Five years, across eight countries: A Taiwanese reporter's firsthand interviews and key accounts from the front lines
Winner of the Golden Tripod Award, the Excellence in Journalism Award, the Human Rights Journalism Award, the Asian Publishers Association Award, and the Wu Shunwen Journalism Award, and one of the most prominent international journalists in recent years.
The recent rise of the internet and social media has made it easier for people to connect, interact, and share information. However, this has also put democratic nations under unprecedented challenges. Extremism, fueled by the internet, has fueled the rise of Muslim youth into terrorist attacks. Foreign powers can intervene in presidential elections across the globe, dividing societies. When online marketing aligns with political interests, is the voice of the people or that of industry being conveyed? How will increasingly extreme positions create new "Berlin Walls" in every country? The global evolution of the online "truth industry," from political and commercial to social and psychological levels, has become a pressing issue that demands understanding.
Journalist Liu Zhixin began his 2016 tour in Brussels, beginning with an interview with the heartbroken but undespairing mother of a jihadist. He then led us on a journey through Belgium, France, Indonesia, Germany, China, and Taiwan, delving into the deadly effects of truth-mongering in various countries. His firsthand interviews revealed the diverse threats posed by the truth industry in these countries, but the most valuable part of his work was the personalities he interviewed. Liu Zhixin's reporting doesn't feature perfectly good people or perfectly evil villains; this book tells the stories of those harmed and consumed by these circumstances, those who rose up to fight against them, and those who profited from them. The tone of the story is to lay out the social structure they are in, why they act the way they do, and to raise a warning about where the trend of the times is going.
We are all part of this era, having experienced and witnessed events together, yet it is always difficult to articulate them. At a time when fake news makes it difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood, we need a solid report to help us navigate the quicksand of information.
