About Book
About Book
A Milosz-esque blend of compassion, faith, and doubt, a moving meditation on place, memory, and trauma.
Always pay attention to the gentle light that wanders, disappears and returns,
A masterpiece that perfectly blends the past and the present, the everyday and the grand, the lyrical and the epic!
——————————
【Content Introduction】
"Real Life" is a collection of 54 poems by Zagajewski, published in Poland in 2019. With keen insight and restrained voice, the poet casts his gaze into the past, capturing on paper the fluid landscape of city streets and the steady trajectory of time. Zagajewski chooses to immerse himself in history, both near and far, and through a personal historical imagination, infuses it with lyrical moments to understand the present. He also selects meaningful details from everyday objects, but never reproduces the mundane. Instead, he liberates the reader from the dull and monotonous sensory experience, depicting the world and its characters with a concise and powerful brushstroke. With a firm yet tender gaze, Zagajewski gazes into the hidden corners of the spirit and reality, making a final attempt to praise this imperfect world.

【Editor's Recommendation】
🐾The final song of Adam Zagajewski, the leader of the Polish "New Wave"!
He was praised by Milosz, Brodsky, Sontag, Walcott and Harold Bloom and was hailed as "the pupil of Poland".
His poetry "achieves an ideal balance between history, reality and aesthetics".
Use pure and clear poetry to explore the pain of history, the indifference of human hearts and the vacillation of morality.
——The last collection of poems written before his death was translated into Chinese for the first time, and a collection of 54 poems was published!
.
🐾The recorder of "everyday miracles" still tries to praise this damaged world. Old photos, sunflowers, turtledoves, radios, beekeeping museums, figs, paintbrushes, crumpled banknotes, Blackberries...
Capturing the moments of ordinary life, "having an intimate dialogue with silent things",
Use concise brushstrokes to create a vivid, sensitive and vigorous poem of life.
.
🐾Depicting the historical memory landscape across time and space, exploring the light in the dark side of history, and examining how history is interpreted, suppressed, or forgotten in the depths of history.
Wandering on the streets full of evidence, let your soul travel through the heavy past and reach the depths of national memory.
Without offering moral judgments or indulging in despair, it integrates the spiritual history of individual lives with history.
Bear witness to history and strive to find meaning.
.
🐾"I lost a real city, but I am looking for an imaginary city"
Zagayevsky's exile was both a curse and a gift.
Always wandering in a foreign land, always waiting for answers.
A poetic spirit grows out of inner deprivation and longing, and the past and hometown become a language that is closer to reality and needs to be retrieved.
Provide more inclusive and broader humanitarian care through the perspective of "displaced people".

【Media Recommendation】
Zagayevsky's poems enter you quietly, take possession of you. It's like the silence of a train stopped on the track. The engine beats like a pulse, and there's always music in these lines, or the echo of music.
—Derek Walcott (Nobel Prize winner in Literature)
For Zagajewski, poetry and thinking are about learning how to see clearly. His poems celebrate those rare moments when we glimpse a world stripped of all its labels.
—Charles Simic (U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry)
In the past, we had Neruda and Brodsky, two extraordinary voices. Now we have Zagajewski, who speaks passionately of history and personal experience in poetry that is pure, lyrical, and lucid. As a fellow poet, I believe he is the most relevant, profound, and meaningful poet of our time, the greatest and most authentic poet alive today.
—Mary Olive Zagajewski’s work is authentic, both unique to its time and eternal…Few poets can capture the subtle experience of traveling through time and space and emotions that Zagajewski evokes when confronting the present environment and exploring historical evidence.
—Los Angeles Review of Books
Zagajewski's intimate, almost gentle, narrative voice creates epic effects... These poems speak the ultimate truth. Like amulets, they accompany us smoothly into the most dangerous and subtle edges of human nature.
—The New York Times Book Review
Zagajewski is a leading figure of the new wave of Polish poetry and a famous poet in any country and any era.
—Chicago Review of Books
Zagajewski is more than just a brilliant writer. His narrative voice was, is, and always will be unique and enigmatic… There is alienation and melancholy in “Real Life,” as well as passion, and Zagajewski manages to show us both simultaneously.
