Koshien

In Japan, no student sport is as closely tied to modern and contemporary Japanese history as high school baseball. The word "Koshien" is almost synonymous with Japanese high school baseball, and it reflects the various aspects of Japanese society, customs, and a century of historical changes like a mirror. From its inception, the Koshien Stadium embodied the hopes of recovery after the Great Kanto Earthquake; during Japan's aggressive wars abroad, it became a "spiritual dojo" for the militarist government to instill imperialistic ideologies like "loyalty to the emperor and patriotism" in young people; after 1945, Americans attempted to transform it into a "dream factory" for Japan's post-war democratization, while the Japanese themselves hoped that a new generation of young people could focus on baseball itself and embark on a new beginning with the nation... This book uses Koshien Stadium as its base, extending its scope to cover the time and space both inside and outside the stadium. It not only focuses on baseball games within the stadium but also observes the stands during the same period, exploring the communities, transportation facilities, and even Japanese society as a whole, as well as the wider world outside the stadium, examining the time, space, and people connected with Koshien from various perspectives.
