The author traces the cultural and political factors that gave rise to cultural theory, examining how groundbreaking theorists such as Barthes and Foucault drew topics such as gender, power, sexuality, and race from the margins. The author concludes that postmodernism may now be dead in the face of the emerging global narrative of capitalism, and that the areas that cultural theory ignored or denied—love, evil, death, morality, metaphysics, religion, and revolution—are precisely the areas that must now be actively explored. Finally, the author argues that the era of universal theory has ended and attempts to identify future directions.
