"The Man of Maize" is a representative work by Miguel Ángel Asturias, a major pioneer of the Latin American magical realist literary genre, and a truly artistic masterpiece. The central plot revolves around the conflict and struggle between Native Americans and native whites over corn cultivation. Native Americans cultivate corn for subsistence and survival. Their religious beliefs hold that corn is transformed from humans, and humans rely on corn for survival. Native whites, however, see it differently, cultivating corn solely for profit. Consequently, a life-and-death struggle ensues between the Native Americans, led by Chief Gaspar Illón, and the white forces. The book also contains numerous tales steeped in legend, such as the legend of Machujón and the legend of the Wolf Postman. Machujón, while searching for his fiancée, was surrounded by fireflies and vanished. Legend has it that he transformed into a shimmering ghost, often appearing in lit cornfields. The Wolf Postman's wife mysteriously disappears, and the distraught postman, lost in the mountains while searching for her, is reportedly transformed into a jungle wolf by villagers.
