About Book
"The Torchbearers" tells the moving stories of three characters. The three protagonists—philosopher Zhou Fucheng, renowned writers Liu Binyan, and Tang Ke—are seminal figures in contemporary Chinese history. They served as mentors and confidants to the author, Zhao Yuesheng, guiding him through the darkness of the 1970s. The author thus calls them "torchbearers," representing the individuals who once brought him light.
"All three essays in this book are about friends, and through them, they also explore music, books, and justice. Tang Ke, Zhou Fucheng, and Liu Binyan are the 'light bearers'—the enlighteners—of his love for music, books, and justice, respectively. Therefore, through this book, we see not only the author's sincere love for his friends, but also the journey of his spiritual growth."—Zhou Guoping (renowned Chinese writer)
"I know more than a few talented writers, but I think the best way to write memoirs like this is to write more. These three essays are more than just a commemoration of friendship, more than a nostalgia for a bygone era. They constantly invite us to reflect on ourselves and on our own age, which is yet to end." - Chen Jiaying (renowned Chinese scholar)
"Of the three teachers and friends mentioned in Yue Sheng's book, two elders—Mr. Zhou Fucheng and Mr. Liu Binyan—have passed away. But their voices, faces, and smiles will live forever in our hearts through Yue Sheng's words, and their light and warmth will forever illuminate and warm us."—Xu Youyu (renowned Chinese scholar)
