About Book

Plata quemada

A bank robbery that shocked Argentina. Two heartbreaking, unconventional robbers, a fictional take on true crime, reexamine the relationship between money and survival. Ricardo Piglia, one of Latin American literary legends, presents "The Burning Coin," a masterpiece that uses a kaleidoscopic approach to retell real historical events, creating a shocking and violent story. The story spans Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The gangsters, known as the "Twins," Brinnene and Dorda, joined a criminal gang and colluded with corrupt police and politicians to rob a bank armored car. They fled to Montevideo, Uruguay, where they were captured in an apartment by joint Argentinian and Uruguayan police. The murderous robbers then killed several police officers during the standoff and, defiantly, set the remaining loot on fire. This marked the beginning of the final police raid. This brutal raid and its shocking conclusion have become a Latin American legend.
In 2000, Argentine director Marcelo Pinheiro adapted "The Burning Coin" into a film of the same name, which won the Spanish Goya Award for Best Spanish-Language Foreign Film.
