About Book
About Book
This double-sided jacket features 50 precious, full-color photographs from the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, the master's masterpiece. Dancing seemed like the end of the road, writing was a dead end, and he threw himself into both. He published his first novel at the age of fourteen. "Cicada," published at twenty-one, remains a must-read and long-seller in the Chinese-speaking world.
At the age of 26, he founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and became an international choreographer, bringing Taiwan to the world.
Over half a century, he choreographed many dances, but was very frugal with his words. The occasional articles he published often shocked the literary world.
The 25 selected essays in "Turbulence and Reflections" reveal the passionate soul of Lin Huaimin and the turbulent era he created. It is a representative work of his life from "Literary Youth Xiao Lin" to "Choreographer Lao Lin"!
Lin Huaimin: "During the pandemic, while preparing to publish a book and rereading my old work, I realized that in my 46 years at Cloud Gate, I've traveled to so many places, done so much, and choreographed 90 dances, yet my writing is so rare...
In the 1970s and 1980s, there was very little information about dance in Taiwan. I couldn't find anyone to discuss dance with, so I diligently read biographies of dancers and dance news from Western media, writing down my thoughts and sharing them with everyone. Reading them now, I find that the dance masters I admire are each unique. They are steadfast in their beliefs and persevere. Writing about these idols is actually a form of self-encouragement in the solitude of life.
After the 1990s, the number of young dance writers multiplied, and I retired from writing about Western dance. The occasional writing I did give was about the background and state of mind of new dance creations. The writing that truly kept me occupied all night long, the writing that compelled me to write, was the eulogy. It was like a ritual: writing it preserved the warmth of our parents, teachers, and friends, and preserved their legacy and instructions.
Getting on and off planes, scenes rising and falling, the hustle and bustle of life, the words I managed to write in the gaps—like the line from the poem "The Abyss" by Yi Xian, "How can a torrent create an image for its reflection?"—are never finished. What remains unwritten is like a passing cloud, forgotten...
