This February, renowned American literary critic George Steiner passed away. This book compiles a series of conversations between the legendary intellectual and French journalist Laure Adler between 2002 and 2014. Divided into five chapters, it covers a wide range of topics and serves as a reflection of Steiner's own life in its final stages.
During the conversation, Steiner vividly recalled his life, how he overcame a childhood disability, and how he miraculously escaped Nazi persecution. He remained deeply concerned with Jewish and linguistic issues, calling Jews "guests on Earth" and viewing every language as a window to a new world. As a multidisciplinary and profoundly learned literary critic, he shared his favorite writers, commenting on Heidegger, Freud, Celine, and others. Inevitably, Steiner, now in his seventies, also discussed death. Before Sunday arrived, he offered readers the wisdom and openness to navigate this "long Saturday."
