"Early Morning" depicts the boundary between dreaming and waking, a time where will and desire, hope and loss coexist. The images and melancholic atmosphere that emerge from this stream of consciousness may bring us closer to our own souls.
Sempé's artistic vision is profound and unfathomable; even the French themselves cannot fully comprehend him. Perhaps this indicates that Sempé does not belong to France, or even to Europe. His greatest contribution to the world is offering a pair of "Sempé's eyes."
