About Book

Exile and the Kingdom

"Exile and the Kingdom" is composed of six short stories. Although each story differs in content, the protagonists all feel a sense of frustration in their daily lives, struggling to find their "kingdom," which is the meaning and happiness in life, thus feeling deeply isolated, like being in "exile."
In his novels, plays, essays, and treatises, Camus profoundly reveals human loneliness in an alien world, the increasing alienation of individuals from themselves, and the inevitability of sin and death. However, while exposing the absurdity of the world, he is neither despairing nor despondent. He advocates for rising up and resisting in the face of absurdity, and upholding truth and justice amidst despair. He pointed out a path of liberal humanism to the world, beyond Christianity and Marxism. His courage in confronting a bleak life, and his fearless spirit of "knowing it's impossible yet still doing it," made him, after World War II, a spokesperson for his generation and a spiritual mentor for the next, not only in France but across Europe, and eventually worldwide.
