The Development of Historiography between the Han and Tang Dynasties (Revised Edition)

This book explores the threads and characteristics of the development of historiography between the Western Han Dynasty and the early Tang Dynasty. The author argues that during this period, the separation of classics from history disrupted the dominant position of Confucian classics; the decline of imperial power at the end of the Han Dynasty led to the prevalence of private historical writing; and the strong intervention of the Sui and Tang dynasties in historical writing led to the formation of the official historical revision tradition. In the ten years since its publication, this book has received widespread acclaim from the academic community. In this revision, the author will add extensive annotations, correct previous errors and shortcomings, and add several new chapters.
