This is the eve of the 22nd century: the dead send postcards from heaven, preachers achieve scientific breakthroughs through trance, genetically engineered vampires can solve problems that baseline humans cannot, and soldiers carry zombie switches that turn off their self-awareness during combat... and all of this is under the watchful eye of an unseen alien.
In a world where biology has become a computational science, wild biologist Daniel Brüks' research has been turned into a terrorist's killing tool. Because of this, he lives in seclusion in the Oregon desert, refusing to associate with a human society that is diversifying into different subspecies. But one night he wakes up to find himself in the eye of a storm. In the midst of an inexplicable pursuit and struggle for survival, he is swept aboard the Thorn Crown, a spaceship heading to the center of the solar system, accompanied by Valerie, a vampire who escaped from the lab, Colonel Jim, who is searching for his son, and a group of monks who claim to have received an evolutionary revelation.
At the end of his pilgrimage, Brüks must face the greatest evolutionary discontinuity since humans first began to think.
