About Book
About Book
Lai Zi Shu, a wanderer from Nanyang, journeyed north and west, her footsteps tracing distant lands. She passionately embraced new experiences, recording the seasonal ebb and flow of her inner world over the years, which culminated in the book "Pause Button." In "Pause Button," Lai Zi Shu gazes at herself in a mirror, transforming from an imagined self to a will for existence built through words. We witness a writer's fluctuating emotions, fleeting stirrings, unspeakable pains, and subtle epiphanies. It's okay to press the pause button; writing allows us to truly look at ourselves. Renowned essayist Li Xiuwen believes: "With her own strength, Lai Zi Shu extends the boundaries of body and soul amidst endless flux." This new edition specially includes five illustrations by Malaysian artist Nongfu, with a softcover binding wrapped in asbestos paper. Looking back over ten years, she sets off lightly, from Malaysia blooming with bougainvillea to the winter streets of London. Through the changing seasons, one can glimpse the essence of a writer's heart and mind.
"I know that the me sitting here today writing these words, this 'self' shaped by my personal will, is perpetually the sum of the paths I've walked, the lives I've experienced, and all the books that have experienced me and that I have experienced. They are complex and disordered. The only things I can organize and write about are the slightest thoughts and what is called 'enlightenment.'" — Lai Zi Shu
"Pause Button" is a collection of essays by Lai Zi Shu, the author of "The Commonplace" and a Malaysian Chinese writer. After working for many years, Lai Zi Shu decided to wander, blending into urban crowds, seeking refuge in small foreign towns, traveling thousands of miles, and traversing the time tunnel of words. From Beijing to London, from city to countryside, these experiences also allowed her to re-organize the people and events, objects and scenes in her memory. Lai Zi Shu's writing possesses a classical charm, yet every line is filled with a fresh vibrancy of Chinese writing, showcasing her keen intellect and talent. In the book, she says she "just wants to write articles that make life worthwhile," which largely reflects her creative conviction before "The Commonplace" first took shape. These walked paths, experienced lives, and the sum of books experienced, converge to form the vast self and understanding shaped by the personal will named "Lai Zi Shu."
