The author, Chung Yiu-wah, born in 1992 in Yuen Long, Hong Kong, has experienced the ups and downs of the city and witnessed the fleeting rebirth of history. He paints a portrait of everyone in this world, but he refuses to conform. He redeems his subject through writing, using words to reconstruct and interrogate the relationship between self and the world.
Time May Never Be on Our Side compiles essays written by the author from 2016 to the end of 2020, selected and arranged roughly chronologically to reveal his intellectual journey. Speculative and lyrical, intellectual and emotional, often coexist harmoniously in his writing, defying conventional literary categories and resulting in a uniquely unconventional literary beauty. This beauty arises from a person who refuses to reconcile with the world's intolerability, choosing instead to confront pain, cruelty, and injustice head-on, while still yearning for transcendence.
This book can be seen as the culmination of the author's years of tireless work. Publishing it is a way of sharing with readers and a way of releasing oneself from the past, of exhaling what Havel called the "first breath" of youth, and of starting anew, embracing the potentially more arduous "second breath."
