About Book

Die Welt von Gestern

The World of Yesterday is an autobiographical work by Austrian author Stefan Zweig, written between 1939 and 1941 during his final years in exile. It was published posthumously in Stockholm in 1942.
In this work, Zweig integrates his personal destiny with the times. Through the people and events he experienced, he reveals the cultural life of the cities and countries he lived in. He documents the turbulent European society from the eve of World War I to the Second World War, describing his interactions with world-renowned poets, writers, sculptors, and musicians, revealing little-known anecdotes about the lives of global cultural figures, while also interweaving the author's delicate thoughts. Zweig begins with his birthplace of Vienna and his Jewish family, continuing to September 1939, when he turned 60 and World War II broke out. He believed this marked the "complete end of the era for those of us who are sixty."
