About Book

M Train

This book is no longer about the past, but about who I am, what I'm doing, the books I'm reading, the thoughts I'm thinking, the coffee I'm drinking, the floors I'm walking on... This book is my life's roadmap. - Patti Smith (Exclusively includes a new article and six new photos from 2016, presented in Chinese translation for the first time.)
Following Patti Smith's Just Kids, Time Train is a new, uncategorizable and deeply emotional memoir. Describing it as her "roadmap," the author explores memory and creativity, literature and coffee, meditation and detective dramas, mourning and hope, and time and its passage. The book comprises twenty essays, like twenty suspended stations, connecting cafes and other locations she visited during her global travels. Through the multifaceted lens of memory, the reader is transported to the land of her inspiration and the source of her longing.
"Time Train" begins at Eno Coffee, the Greenwich Village café she visits every morning. Sip black coffee, watch the mirage of the present world, and, with a yearning for the way things used to be, bury her head in her notebook, writing furiously... Her fluent, exquisite writing leads the reader on a journey between dreams and reality, past and present. From Frida Kahlo's Blue House in suburban Mexico, to a meeting of the Arctic Circle Expedition Society in Berlin, from the house she had just purchased on the New York waterfront, which was devastated by a devastating hurricane, to the graves of Jean-Jacques Genet, Arthur Rimbaud, Michel Plath, and Yukio Mishima.
Following the author's ever-shifting roadmap, we are drawn ever closer to the heart of her life's defining moments: we examine the daily routines of her solitary existence (accompanied by her beloved collection of books: Murakami, Blake, Bolaño, Sebald, Burroughs...), join her on quixotic adventures, and ultimately, gaze with her upon the irreparable black hole left in her life after the tragic loss of her beloved guitarist, Fred Sonic Smith. Black-and-white Polaroids taken by the author over the years are interspersed between the pages, like talismans from a bygone era. This book reaffirms Patti Smith as one of the most unique and extraordinary artists working today.
