About Book
About Book
From now on, new Taiwanese people must change their past view that "Taiwan is a frontier".
With your country at the center of the map, you can see the world.
Since former President Lee Teng-hui published "Taiwan's Stand" in 1999, Taiwan has experienced two changes of political power. In the sixteen years since he stepped down from the presidency, Lee's concern for the future of Taiwan, Japan, and East Asia has remained steadfast. The philosophy he expounded in "Taiwan's Stand": "A 'New Taiwan, New Taiwanese' must assert their presence and create a new history, grounded in mission and responsibility," remains unchanged to this day. Hoping to reorient Taiwan's future, he wrote "New Taiwan's Stand."
The book is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 describes his early personality formation and spiritual beliefs; Chapter 2 reviews his career as a scholar and politician; Chapter 3 offers observations and comments on the fifteen years of successive political parties in power; and Chapter 4 analyzes the East Asian situation, which is closely related to Taiwan, and offers advice to Japan.
During his two democratic reforms, former President Lee coined the concept of "New Taiwanese." He argued that the external obstacle to Taiwan's democratization was China, while the internal factor was the issue of national identity. He called on these "New Taiwanese" to unite, transcending differences in province, ethnicity, and place of origin, and work together to consolidate Taiwan's shared destiny and resist China's attempts to unify and annex Taiwan.
