Two generations of scholars, spanning five locations—Beijing, Oxford, Wenzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai—took three years to complete this conversation. Drawing on Professor Xiang Biao's personal experience, the conversation explores a series of transcendental questions, encompassing reflections on the transformation of Chinese society over the past half century, intellectual communities, globalization and populism, and anthropological methodology. This book provides a transcript of these conversations and offers a method for examining and refining our thinking: how to position ourselves amidst the flood of self-perception; how to creatively build our own small worlds in an era of globalization; and how to address grand questions in a society plagued by intellectual constraints.
