About Book
About Book
Looking back on most of my life, I feel that I am, after all, a 20th-century man. I have no expectations for the 21st century; I simply feel that my 20th century has not yet ended. This memoir is also a memoir of my 20th century.
In the book, I recount my own growth and long educational journey, specifically linking my teaching experience at six American universities—Princeton, Chicago, and Harvard—with my studies, euphemistically calling it "study abroad." Following the model of a "coming-of-age novel," I write about my life experiences rather than recounting my academic achievements. Finally, I've even added a chapter on "Love History," which serves as my "emotional education."
For me, the structure of a memoir can be somewhat free, like an unedited film. I often invite a virtual interrogator, much like counterpoint in composition, to question, challenge, and challenge me, forcing me to self-reflect. Even though some chapters are monologues, I still have a silent interlocutor within me. The second part of the book is a conversation between me and Zhang Lijun, who further prompts me to reflect on my own learning and reading experiences.
In this 21st-century, globally networked world, it's almost impossible to rediscover the meaning of individual life in the 20th century and to engage in quiet reflection. Even so, I still want to keep writing, at least to confirm my existence.
