WE
Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884–1937) was a Russian novelist, playwright, and satirist, and the originator of the dystopian novel.Written in the form of a journal, *We* depicts life in the totalitarian state of "OneState" in the 26th century. In this society, individuals are identified by numbers rather than names, live in completely transparent glass houses, wear identical uniforms, consume synthetic food, and are allotted sexual partners. The state is ruled by an unchanging, all-powerful "Benefactor." *We* is Zamyatin's enduring masterpiece, pioneering the new literary genre of dystopian fiction. It is often regarded as one of the three most famous dystopian novels in world literature, alongside Aldous Huxley's *Brave New World* and George Orwell's *Nineteen Eighty-Four*.
