The boundaries of meaning

Any musicological study must initially confront the question of how to understand the meaning of music. Like all great musicologists, Rosen acknowledges that music must convey some kind of meaning. So, when discussing and understanding music, are there boundaries to meaning, and how should these boundaries be drawn? Rosen argues that the meaning of music exists only within the music itself and must be understood within the framework of its own musical language, a view he elaborates on in this book. Furthermore, the book analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of methods commonly used by scholars and theorists throughout history to interpret the meaning of musical works, offering insightful and shrewd suggestions for adjusting our perspectives and better appreciating great musical works.
