Thinking Heraldry

This book marks the transition period for Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, who transitioned from writing in the style of natural history to fictional narratives in the style of short stories. Since the 1950s, Shibusawa has been active in Japanese literature as an introducer of European culture and translator of French literature. This book is the first time he turns his attention to his native Japan, juxtaposing Japanese and Western literary traditions. In this volume, Shibusawa extracts numerous classic images from literary works and, using heraldic writing, explores the core of imagination inherent in both Eastern and Western literature, both similar and divergent.
