Xu Bing: Thought and Method

This book, organized chronologically, attempts to comprehensively chart the artist's creative journey, spanning over 40 years, from the 1970s to the present day. Including over 60 works in prints, drawings, installations, documents, manuscripts, videos, and documentaries, it charts the complete trajectory of Xu Bing's artistic exploration and showcases his ideas and methods. The book is divided into three sections: the first covers Xu Bing's period before he left the country (1977 to 1990); the second covers his period after he left (1990 to 2008); and the third covers his period after he returned to China (2008 to 2018). Each of these three periods includes Xu Bing's significant and influential representative works. Furthermore, these key works are interspersed with smaller works that provide contextual connections between them, as well as illustrative and experimental pieces that clarify the trajectory of his development. The rich images and textual descriptions of the works make this book a valuable reference book for researchers in case studies of artists; at the same time, it also enables ordinary readers to truly understand the artist's work - "actually creating a closed circle that belongs to the artist himself", and understand the source of inspiration for the artist's artistic creation - "sensitivity to the times leads to the transformation of old methodologies."
