Ken Kitagawa, the second son of a wealthy Japanese family, has a handsome face of Western descent but a heart prone to self-destruction.
Influenced by the bilingual writer Yoko Tawada, she studied Russian at Waseda University. After graduation, she went to the United States to study at G University, where she met all kinds of teachers and students in the academic environment.
Isaac, the talkative doctor of comparative literature, Fanny, the little girl who works in an ice cream shop, Isaac's Chinese roommate Fu, the red-haired and unkempt Professor C, Isaac's mentor Professor K, the "Tyrannosaurus Rex", and Professor M, the professor of classics who is also the "top lady in the ladies' room".
College is no ivory tower; there's the fierce competition for position within the aisle, as well as the complexities of emotional and physical relationships. In Yan's first-person narrative, youth isn't a smooth, rosy road either, but rather a journey of self-analysis, self-loathing, and self-deception. While wandering in a foreign land, Yan and Professor C gradually develop a threadlike, unreliable connection.
