About Book

Less Than One

"Less Than One" is Joseph Brodsky's first collection of essays. It consists mainly of long pieces, interspersed with a few shorter ones, totaling only eighteen articles. Each piece is brilliant, and combined with its unique style and "book form," it forms a perfect book. This is the spiritual autobiography of a great poet and a private memoir. Through creative interpretation and analysis, Brodsky pays tribute to Akhmatova, Auden, and others, powerfully defends individual values, and exposes and accuses the crimes of dictators. Such accusations do not use public language and rhetoric but are made from the perspective of "a poet against an empire." This perspective, in turn, stems from his belief: language is above all, even an object of time-worship, and poetry is the highest form of language.
Since its initial translation and introduction in China in early 2014, Mr. Huang Canran, a poet, translator, and interpreter, has continued to meticulously refine and polish this classic translation. Six years later, we are able to present readers with a brand-new, thoroughly revised edition, striving for perfection, as a tribute to the great Russian poet and English essayist Brodsky.
