Searching for a lifeboat

The 32nd issue of "Single Reading" renews its journey into world literature, following Australia, the UK, and France, and now to Ireland, a country rich in literary tradition and still vibrant with literature. Before travel restrictions are fully lifted, we will first use literature to explore Ireland, a land full of suffering but where the people have opened themselves up to the outside world in an unparalleled way. This issue features Yan Ge, a writer who once lived in Ireland and now lives in the UK, and Peng Lun, publisher of Islands Books, as guest editors. They will translate twelve unique contemporary Irish novelists and their works, who are highly regarded by local literary readers but are still rarely introduced in the Chinese world:
Cathy Sweeney, Lucy Caldwell, Wendy Erskine, Nicole Flatley, Eoin McNamee, Colin Barrett, Lisa McInerney, Kevin Barry, Louise Kennedy, Danielle McLaughlin, Jane Carson and Melatu Uche-Okori.
Their writing focuses on the fate of individuals drifting in the shadow of the great era. They enter history with a literary perspective, turning the "Northern Ireland issue", immigration issues and the picture of late capitalism into the story background, depicting the pain experienced by the working people at the bottom and every little person in the torrent of history, and their desire for dignity and redemption; at the same time, they also depict the spiritual dilemma of contemporary people incisively, the decadence of not being able to find the meaning of their own existence in an empty life, the helplessness of wanting to hug others but finding the barriers between people that cannot be crossed. We are all people with similar destinies, looking for a lifeboat.
