"Lonely Seventeen" includes several short stories from Bai Xianyong's early and middle years. Bai's early novels can be divided into two categories: the first, which are more or less rewritten from his own personal experiences, such as "Grandma Jin," "Let's Go See the Chrysanthemums," "Sister Yuqing," and "Lonely Seventeen," revealing the author's childhood and youth. The second category, however, is heavily imbued with fantasy, with "Youth" being the most notable example. Other works, such as "Thunder," "Black Rainbow," "Little Spring," and "Hands Hidden in the Pocket," also draw on fantasy to some degree. Xia Zhiqing considers Bai Xianyong a prodigy among contemporary Chinese short story writers. Since the May Fourth Movement, only five or six people, from Lu Xun to Eileen Chang, have rivaled him in artistic achievement.
