About Book

Orlando

The story of Orlando begins in the Elizabethan era of the 16th century and ends in the present, when Woolf ceased writing in 1928, spanning four hundred years. Orlando is a beautiful, innocent aristocratic youth, fascinated by poetry, and favored by the Queen, who brings him to court. After King James ascends the throne and the Great Frost arrives, Orlando encounters a Russian princess and falls in love, only to suffer betrayal both in literature and in love. After a great fire in Constantinople, Orlando is transformed into a woman, first living among the gypsies before returning to England and becoming a lady of high society. Entering the Victorian era, Orlando is forced to compromise with the spirit of the times in order to continue writing. At the end of the story, Orlando, now a prize-winning poet of the 20th century, returns to the mansion that occupies the heart of the novel, and beneath the great oak tree, she reflects on her enduring quest for literature and poetry.
This book is a biography written by Woolf for a fictional character. The language is light-hearted and humorous, and the conception is imaginative. It is hailed as a feminist classic and a pioneering work that tells the story of the "second sex" from a literary perspective.
