About Book
About Book
A work that rises in style and goes against the times, a collection of Cao County stories that sparkles with inspiration.
*
With rebellious language, this novel traverses the ravines of narrative. Closely adhering to experience, it fishes for the life we miss; yet, in the turbulence of language, it constantly breaks through the shell of experience, unleashing a captivating power. The plot unfolds like a crumpled piece of paper slowly unfolding, unexpectedly acquiring minute creases. It features characters attempting to prove their existence, and those who, having proven their existence, tear themselves apart. Five novels, each with its own distinct style, intertwine to form a brilliant collection of Caoxian stories.
*
Recommended readings by A Yi, Dan Hansong, Dong Xiao, He Ping, Hu Sang, Li Jing, Lin Peiyuan, and Zhao Song
*
This book collects five short and medium-length novels written by Sun Yisheng in recent years. While their styles vary, the stories are mostly set in his hometown of Cao County and the wider plains surrounding it. Sun Yisheng's novels evoke a sense of free-flowing freedom, unconstrained by purpose. Life, in its everyday form, reveals its steps and projections, its hidden pains and wounds, its ignorance and understanding, and the unpreparedness and loss of consciousness it can bring when it confronts us head-on. Sun Yisheng immerses himself in the subtleties of events, unfazed by the tedious process of examining them from different perspectives and moments, repeatedly overlaying, revising, and retouching them. In this process, a sense of reality slowly emerges. The characters in his novels are always shadowy, the plots suddenly arise and then quietly vanish, and objects are blurred by his flickering brushstrokes. Perhaps, the characters, the plots, and the objects themselves are not the protagonists of his novels. Rather, he writes of the plains that overflow toward the horizon and the time that flows across them.
