The book market is booming, bindings are becoming more refined, bookstores are attracting more visitors, and writers are more globally renowned than ever before. Yet, true literature is nearly extinct. Dubravka, speaking as an Eastern European who has been neglected by the Anglo-American literary market, laments the many chaotic conditions in today's literary world:
New literary stars appear every now and then; literature is repeatedly "redefined"; identity politics writings are all showing off their skills; copyright operation models that put the cart before the horse; bookstores that are like a combination of supermarkets and cafes; book fairs that are essentially unrelated to books; internet celebrity editors whose style is no different from that of writers; media book reviews that believe that Ivana Trump can "make a more incisive analysis of the political situation of the motherland" than Brodsky... Literature has lost its access mechanism and evaluation criteria. Any star can promote their new book anywhere, and any negative review can be used to make profits by the cunning market.
However, the strangest thing is that in this incredibly "democratic" global market, its cultural "products" and creative requirements always remind people of our old friend "socialist realism"...
