Notes from Underground is a novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The book is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, the Underground Man, a retired civil servant in his forties. He suffers from a morbid inferiority complex, yet he frequently engages in self-analysis. The book consists of two main parts: the first is a lengthy monologue by the Underground Man, exploring philosophical topics such as free will, human irrationality, and the irrationality of history. The second section follows the Underground Man as he recounts his past and his encounter with a prostitute, Lisa.

Notes from Underground is not only Dostoyevsky's magnum opus but also foreshadows his five later major novels: Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Devils, The Boy, and The Brothers Karamazov. It is also considered a turning point in Dostoyevsky's creative career. Nobel Prize winner Gide considered it "the pinnacle of his career, his masterpiece, or, if you prefer, the key to his thought."
