About Book
About Book
Written for father, for son, and for myself, it spans three generations, creating a perfect, heartwarming triangular prism of Hong Kong people's stories. This is the latest breakthrough novel by Book Fair Grand Prize winner Tung Kai-cheung!
This is a book about Dad's grandson and his son, and it has also become a book about his son's father, that is, his own book.
Following "Heart," "God," and "Beloved Wife," this is Tung Chi-chang's most accessible, heartwarming, and hilarious work.
Following his novel "Beloved Wife," which explored the nature and possibilities of sexual desire in marriage and relationships, Dong Qichang presents another human-centered masterpiece, focusing on the relationship between father and son, and describing the struggles and expectations between parents and children.
"Destined Son" explores the lives of children, both real and non-existent, from a father's perspective. The first section, "Destined Son: Fruit," uses memoirs and essays to depict the daily interactions between father and son and their mutual tolerance. It depicts the son's obsession and the sweet frustration of parenthood, creating a vivid and humorous read. The second section, "Descartes' Daughter," follows the author, a daughterless man, through the fictional biography of Descartes, imagining life with a daughter. The third section, "Destined Son: Flower," uses letters from a fictional son, Flower, to serve as a counterpoint to the real son. The author also incorporates his own childhood memories as another implicit expression of a father's expectations of his son.
Through realistic, fictional, and re-fictional writing strategies and perspectives, the book fuses prose and fiction into one, allowing father and son to connect in the most unexpected places.
Dong Qizhang: When writing about my son, I was extremely careful, repeatedly considering the wording, the selection, the editing, and the tone and angle to present a realistic yet undemeaning portrayal of him. Even as a father and a writer, I don't have the right to arbitrarily use my son's life as material for my writing. ... I showed it to my son personally... He didn't mind, seeming to fully understand the essence of writing. Overall, his comment was: "It's quite funny." I believe that's the highest compliment I could possibly receive from him.
