Possible Worlds records Yang Xiao's travels, study visits, and short-term stays in more than a dozen countries, including the United States, Egypt, Kenya, Myanmar, and Germany, from 2010 to 2019. It is a journey of a young man embracing the world, exploring possibilities (and recognizing impossibilities) on the ground.
The decade from 2010 to 2019 was a time when the Chinese people and their passports truly embraced the world. Looking back, this feels more like a special historical blessing, almost inevitably treated with nostalgia. The author takes us back to one scene after another, allowing the gaze of today to illuminate the records of those moments. From multiple perspectives, including current events, humanities, history, and geography, this book explores how, in a world in transition, we learn to come to terms with the past, how we confront the implosion and contingency of history, and how we explore and contemplate a possible world.
