Young Kira lives in a desolate village, poor and brutal, where "survival of the fittest" is the governing creed. Kira was born with a deformed leg. After her mother died, people who wanted to seize her family's land brought her before the Council of Elders, attempting to expel her from the village and leave her to fend for herself. However, unexpectedly, the Council of Elders already had other plans for her. The elders spared her life because of Kira's embroidery talent, appointing her as the ceremonial gown embroiderer to preserve history, and allowing her to live in the Hall of Justice.

While mending gowns and learning dyeing, Kira, along with her friend Matt and young woodcarver Thomas, experiences a series of mysterious encounters, discovering a secret that will change her life and the future of her village. What is the man-eating monster? Why do gifted children all become orphans? After the truth is revealed, will Kira leave with her father, or stay and embroider a true future with her talent?
