“Borges on Buddhism” is an essay co-authored by the master of Spanish literature, Argentine poet, novelist, critic, and translator Jorge Luis Borges, and Argentine writer and scholar Alicia Jurado, based on the lectures Borges gave on Buddhism. The original work was published in 1976. The twelve chapters in the book separately discuss the legendary Buddha and the historical Buddha, the evolution of philosophy and beliefs before the advent of Buddhism, Buddhist cosmology and ethics, several important concepts related to Buddhism such as reincarnation, karma, enlightenment, Zen, nirvana, etc., as well as the main branches and sects of Buddhism, and the development of Buddhism in China. It represents Borges' understanding and interpretation of this mysterious and complex Eastern religion, given his vast knowledge and strong interest in Eastern culture.
