About Book

Schools and Styles of Anthropological Theory

If humans are free, what kind of freedom is this? How can we explain and understand the regularities and patterned features of our collective lives? What is culture and what is society? What are the sources, meanings, and implications of the differences between human communities, manifested in identity, perspective, or power? Does anthropology have a place in the study of nonhumans? How should we understand and think about anthropological theory in the 21st century?
This book originates from the long-standing core lecture series offered by the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge for students majoring in social anthropology. This series aims to provide accessible and comprehensive coverage of anthropological theory, primarily for undergraduates, but also attracts master's students and, frequently, doctoral students. This book covers classic anthropological theories, including evolutionism, diffusionism, functionalism, structural functionalism, structuralism, transactionalism, neo-Marxism, interpretivism, feminism, and postcolonialism. It also explores widely discussed theoretical schools and theories, such as the Frankfurt School and the Manchester School, practice theory, and actor-network theory. It also addresses both classic and relatively recent theoretical splits, such as the "writing culture" moment and the ontological turn. Furthermore, it addresses issues of historical thinking in anthropology, the expansion and boundaries of field sites, and the unique mechanisms that shape and reshape anthropological ideas.
In this book, the classic theoretical clues are clearly connected and have their current inheritance and evaluation. The cutting-edge theories are grasped accurately and important issues are covered comprehensively. It is suitable for undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars and lecturers in anthropology (ethnology), sociology, history, archaeology and other related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. It can be used as a textbook for anthropology (ethnology) theory and school courses, and can also be read together with the required books for the course.
